About SSCO
Stockholm Federation of Student Unions, SSCO, is an organisation for cooperation between student unions in the Stockholm region. Through our more than 50 members SSCO represents around 80 000 students. Founded in 1896 the organisation’s original focus was providing services to the students in Stockholm. Since then SSCO has moved towards working as a lobby organisation and today the main focus of SSCO is influencing politicians on the local, regional and national levels. SSCO continues its work towards officials in all levels of government to improve the situation of the students in Stockholm and to strengthen Stockholm as a leading region for education in Sweden. By bringing student related issues to the attention of politicians and other policy makers and by working to maintain existing collaborations SSCO aims to secure students’ long-term influence in the region.

SSCO is responsible for Stiftelsen Stockholms Studentbostäder, SSSB, which owns and administrates 8 000 apartments for students in the Stockholm region. To live in SSSB’s student housing you have to study at least half-time at an institution whose student union is affiliated with SSCO. As from 1 July 2010 SSSB accommodation and waiting-list will only be available to students studying in Stockholm and who are members of an SSCO-affiliated student union. The situation will not change for those of you who study and are a member of a student union, just ensure that you renew your union membership next term.
Please note that SSCO does not have any influence over the distribution of SSSB's rooms and apartments.
We recommend that you start looking for housing as soon as possible as it can be difficult to find housing in Stockholm at times.

Student card at SL As a student in Stockholm you can buy a student travelcard at SL (Stockholm Public Transport). Read more about the student card at SL’s website.
Insurance It is very important to have insurance when you are staying in Sweden.
Citizens of EU/EEA countries You should have an insurance form called E-128, E-129, E-111 or a similar number. You get this form from your social security office at home. So be sure to get this form before you arrive to Sweden. With this form you pay the same amount as a Swedish citizen at the doctor’s office. The prices are SEK 120: - if you have booked the appointment in advance and SEK 250-350 if the visit is an emergency visit. Please make sure to bring your ID-card or passport.
Citizens of Australia, Algeria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Quebec Sweden has agreements on publical medical benefits with these countries. If you come from one of these countries you pay the same amount as a Swedish citizen at the doctor’s office. See above for prices. Make sure to bring your passport to the doctor’s office and that you know what the agreement with your country include.
If you have private insurance Make sure that you know exactly how your insurance works. Most private insurance works in a way that you have to pay the actual cost of the visit to the doctor or hospital. You will get a receipt of your payment and that has to be sent in to your insurance office before you get your money back. Make sure that you always have enough money with you to be able to make a visit to the doctor’s office. Note! Private health insurance seldom covers dental treatment.
If you don’t have insurance SSCO does not recommend that you are without insurance for the time that you are in Sweden. A doctor’s appointment or hospital treatment can become very expensive without insurance.
Kammarkollegiet All students at Swedish state universities or university colleges are insured for emergency hospital care due to accidents at school. More info can be found at www.kammarkollegiet.se (in Swedish) or contact SSCO.
Student Chaplains The Church of Sweden and several other denominations have special chaplains for students in Stockholm. They offer counselling in spiritual and private matters. Services in Stockholm are also held in a range of languages. For further information, call the student chaplains at Stiftskansliet, tel. 08 - 21 94 80.
